One never knows how to approach a sore subject in life. They usually avoid it at all costs, sometimes running in the other direction. Still, it doesn’t make the problems go away, nor does it mask the impending doom you feel inside. It covers it up like a bandage that at any moment could fall off if you’re not too careful.

That’s the situation I find myself in now, standing here on the front stoop of my father’s lavish colonial mansion. The last time we spoke, I practically demanded him to get his shit together and give me Adriano. Only, he refused. Whereas others before him would be terrified to do that very thing, my father did it with a sense of finesse that I don’t know if I should applaud or merely beat the shit out of him.

“You sure you want to do this, Mateo?” Glancing over, my eyes meet Valentino’s. I still don’t trust this motherfucker as far as I can throw him, but it seems he has more information on all of us combined than every single member of this family has put together. It’s also apparently his job to protect me from DeRossini, even though he’s done a shit job of it so far.

“This coming from the man who almost let me get killed.” I side-eye him before glancing back up at my father’s home.

“How was I supposed to know you’d be a dumb shit and willingly allow yourself to be captured?” Fuming, he kicks at the stray rocks that’ve somehow found their way on my father’s paved, eccentric front yard. “You’d think you would have a bit more self-preservation than that.”

“I don’t have anything,” I reply, voice hardening. “You’re the one who pretty much told me that.”

When Valentino came to me the other night, I was down and out about things between Carina and me. So, instead of obsessing over it, I decided the best course of action was clearing up all this shit instead. Only, I didn’t know just how far the rabbit hole went, let alone how twisted and screwed up it was until Valentino opened his mouth and aired out all the Calvetti’s dirty laundry…

I take a seat in my chair while Valentino sits in the one straight across from me, fidgeting in his seat. It still fucks me up to know this is the man who slid by right under my nose and watched my every move since the moment my mother died in cold blood. He looks nothing like he did when he was under the guise of John Stewart, and to recall all the things I’ve said and had Gavino do to him causes goose bumps of awareness to form over my skin.

He deserved none of that. In fact, the bastard I was fighting for, Ricco, isn’t even with us anymore. We had to put that cowardly asshole down the second he got out of jail. His lips were too loose, and his pockets were too empty. I caught him selling information that was only allowed for my men’s ears.
